The Evolution of a Cult can be defined by specific steps.

1. The Core Concept

An inspiring figure or figureheads present a revolutionary approach offering a panacea for alienated and vulnerable people.

Thus we find ourselves. They’re getting ready to challenge the establishment down in Brisbane. Tensions are rising. Smoke is rising from the sidelines. An isolated player, naked, shivering, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently as a symbol, has stumbled through the lines and is removed in secrecy to a different team at Derbyshire.

Do you recall the early days, when the world was still young? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.

2. Love-Bombing

Team architects promise a reboot, optimism ahead, support, redemption within a community united in belief in the method.

What did it represent initially? A team united basking in glory. Body art. Forearms. Focus. Elite male wellness energy. Admittedly, The squad insist Bazball doesn’t actually exist, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what did we see?

But we know the concept. It’s Harry Brook attempting a move so unconventional it defies description. It’s the adrenaline of the captain in his final form, a demeanor suggesting: thoughtful warrior, beard made of wood, natural look, genuinely raw you wouldn’t be surprised to look down and see him playing on the ground bare-chested embracing nature.

It’s the opener continuing to have permission addressing the media, appearing as a cheerful animal smartly dressed, saying stuff like we’re breaking down traditions. Indeed, the atmosphere, for a significant period, was uplifting.

3. Expansion Period

Growth phase. Togetherness strengthened by rote learning of key phrases. These ideas may seem irrational as a loyalty check.

Am I alone? The criticism, the fury, the feeling of letdown following the initial loss feels overblown, too much. England batted badly during the match, as history shows. They were savaged while bowling for a couple of hours as plans unraveled, carved around by the batsman imitating their style effectively, responsive to the situation, a performer excelling with brilliance.

Currently, we see the criticism, the frustration, the perception of the team as a failure. The consensus is that losing isn’t enough, they need to lose righteously, to be scoured, obliterated, destroyed via traditional methods of the pace attack, the conventional tactics of the bowler, out there celebrating his wickets humbly as if receiving a pleasant gift. How will they respond?

4. The Backlash Phase

Problems arise because of mistakes. Yet, mistakes are denied. It turns to hostility externally.

In truth, approaching the next match, we are at an intriguing moment in the journey of this approach. England could quite easily win in the next Test through aggressive play. More likely, failure may follow. And if they do lose it seems we could be witnessing the death cult phase.

Ahead of this, a couple of points to consider on the topic. Previously, at the start, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. There was outrage, which demonstrated since it’s clear the best way of proving something definitely isn’t a cult is if supporters send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages rejecting criticism of the beliefs.

What has happened in the last few days is just as interesting. Opposition to the style is now the trend. We have a uniformly angry internet, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset travelling fans missing out on play, reminiscent of people wanting fairness.

Meanwhile, there is the broader context of Australia’s more nuanced deep-seated frustration at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, claiming, your cherished traditions and have developed to distinguish yourselves from others, it’s not serious after all.

And this is the real point. Everything is a cult. The style was a trend because cricket is a cult. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a circle, a garden party, an insular community with two hundred years of opaque and ritualistic cult history defining it. This has always been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the colonial game of the British, the original sports washers. And surprisingly, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a royal family remains.

England’s cricketers have been sealed up in this environment since childhood. Seeking change, to create a less brutal environment, they are just repeating their upbringing, forming a new circle, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with a new team and a mentor promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.

Focus on the moment. Confront risks. But no matter how fast and far you run, things stay similar.
