The megacity Wakes Up to Toxic Haze Following Festival of Lights

On Tuesday morning citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" level.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents 10x the healthy level established by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous haze that blankets the capital as the cold season approaches.

Yet recently, the current regional leadership appealed to the highest court to seek a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Ruling and Enforcement

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to extremely hazardous levels recorded during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Implications

The proliferation of firecrackers during Diwali also triggered a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Issue

The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in Delhi have persisted as a serious problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst levels ever measured in Beijing, which was once considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

This crisis in the capital is caused by a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of farming communities.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous haze that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Health and Economic Impact

Public health and economic consequences on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple studies.

This pollution causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely mortalities annually in the capital.
